The fundamental aim of shakti is locating the remnants of the Tropical Dry
Evergreen Forest (T.D.E.F), exhaustively documenting the species
composition of that forest and propagating all the species contained
therewithin, and has been pursued with dedication and considerable
success.
The herbarium
preserved
in the center is in good condition and is deemed
the best available by Father Mathew (Author of the well known, “Flora of TamilNadu
Carnatic”), for his work on the new flora of the region from
cuddalore to Chennai.
The available documentation of the forest
at shakti is of great potential use as a model to other centers and
conservation efforts as a way of assessing the stature of remnant
vegetation.
The encouragement and education of the population of Auroville has
continued. Various forest areas within Auroville have been planted
with T.D.E.F species – over 40 acres. An additional education tool
was developed for internal use within Auroville titled “ A
Planters Guide to the T.D.E.F. Species”. It gives a description of each species, where it is
found and simple guidelines as how to plant it. It also includes many
illustrations.
